Becoming a successful Reader An important part of becoming a successful and independent reader is being able to choose “good fit” books. During our borrowing time, we have been working on choosing good fit books and building our reading stamina. Students have been following the ‘I PICK’ method from The Daily 5. I look the book over – cover, blurb and a page or two on the inside. Purpose: Why might I want to read it? To learn, for fun Interest: Does it interest me? Comprehension: Do I understand what I am reading? Know the words: Do I know most of the words? *For our beginning readers we focus on choosing picture books as the illustrations are as important as the text, and both work together to tell the story.
